Counseling Services for Your Credit Legacy

Repairing your credit yourself is a very time-consuming and possibly expensive process that will leave you with questions to be answered. There are credit counseling services and consolidation options available that make the process easier, where you get others to do the hard work for you for a fee.

Credit Counseling

Credit counseling services will work with you and your creditors to set up affordable payment plans and arrange for repayment of your debts in a manner in which you can afford. They may also advise you on budgeting and offer you a financial analysis based on your current income to debt ratio.

Credit counseling services can also be used to help repair your credit after it has been damaged due to identity theft or if wrong information appears on your credit report. With your permission, they can contact the credit reporting agencies on your behalf and work to remove negative information from your credit report.

Credit Consolidation

Credit consolidation is often a last-ditch effort to repair credit and bring your finances back under control. This is usually done by a reputable credit counseling service that will work with your various creditors and arrange with them to lower your payments, your interest, and/or your total due to them in exchange for a promise of payment by a certain time. This is also known as debt restructuring, and usually lenders will only agree to it if there are serious indications that the alternative will be for you to file bankruptcy and they end up with nothing at all.

Credit consolidation can have an effect on your credit score and appear on your credit report which is why it should be used as a last resort. It also may mean making significant changes to your spending habits because generally if a credit card that you use gets wrapped up in a credit consolidation, the card will be cancelled as part of the agreement.

Credit consolidation can be managed alone without paying for the services of a company to do them for you, but it is very difficult to pull off as it requires skillful negotiations with all of your creditors and banks to whom you owe money. Many of them may be willing to work with a professional service (that they may have worked with in the past), but have little patience or faith in you to negotiate properly and hold up your end of the negotiations once a deal has been struck.
